Absolutely no one, including Justin Herbert, thought that Justin Herbert was going to get the start against the Kansas City Chiefs. Through one half, Justin Herbert is 13 of 20 for 195 yards and a touchdown. He also has a touchdown on the ground. For reference, Patrick Mahomes, the reigning Super Bowl MVP and former NFL MVP, is 8/18 for 60 yards and a touchdown. The Chargers are up 14 – 6 at the half and already, it looks like the Chargers have a quarterback for the future.
Obviously, its only been 30 minutes and the Chiefs defense is seriously beat up. They are missing multiple starters at every level. While it is true that the Chargers are not playing the Chiefs at full power, this audition for Herbert is something for him to build on, even if this start does not carry on to the next game. Having a game like the one he is having points really helps him build his confidence.
Justin Herbert is well on his way to breaking records for rookie debuts. The one I am eyeing is a record currently held by Cam Newton. In Cam Newtons Rookie Debut, he threw for a total of 422 total yards. Herbert is a little behind the mark, but is having one of the finest games a rookie has ever had. There’s 30 minutes left, but there is no reason to believe that he doesn’t lead the Chargers to a massive upset over a team that many have already dubbed the 2021 Super Bowl Champs.
